In today’s society, there is an increasing danger of strangers and the unknown. There are hundreds of news articles that recount people and children being kidnapped. For this reason, it is becoming increasingly important to be aware of your surroundings and to be prepared if you find yourself in a bad situation.
Whether at the local grocery, clothing, or shoe store, stores are where kidnappers typically make their move. When you are paying attention to your receipt or your car keys, you are not paying attention to your surroundings and therefore making yourself vulnerable. Unfortunately, many kidnappers will sell the people they take to human traffickers. So, by not paying attention, you are opening yourself up to the dangers of human trafficking. Next time you leave a store, you may want to watch for any running vehicles or any vehicles with darkened windows. Running vehicles can make for a quick getaway while darkened windows make it difficult to spot a person inside the vehicle. It is also important to be aware of who is around you. If you are being followed, you can assume you are a target and need to act accordingly.
If You Are Attacked
If you find yourself being followed, get out a weapon (car keys, mace, etc.) and dial 911. If that does not deter your follower, then try yelling and drawing attention to yourself. Kidnappers do not like it when their targets make a spectacle out of themselves, it can make the targeted individual harder to catch. Finally, try to stay calm and be ready to fight if necessary. Your follower may be expecting you to be scared, so if he or she attacks you and you are calm, you may catch them off guard, giving you the upper hand.
It is important to be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to react if you are ever caught in a potentially dangerous situation.
